EFFECTS OF PARENTAL NEGLECT ON CHILDREN'S EMOTIONAL REGULATION IN PHYSICAL HEALTH ISSUES

Child maltreatment (CM) is characterized by physical, psychological, and sexual harm or neglect caused by caregivers. Parental neglect stands out, manifesting in unmet physical and emotional needs, compromising child development and leading to psychosocial issues such as socialization difficulties and aggressive behaviors. Prolonged abuse further increases the risk of physical illnesses and mental disorders in adulthood. This article seeks to analyze the impacts of parental neglect on children's emotional regulation capacity, as well as the consequences on physical health and psychological development over time. The research consists of a systematic literature review using databases such as SciELO, MEDLINE, and LILACS, with inclusion criteria focusing on original articles from 2014 to 2024. The review shows that parental neglect profoundly affects the physical and emotional health of children, particularly those aged 0 to 5 years. Early detection tools and support networks are essential for preventing these cases. However, sample limitations in the studies indicate a need for more inclusive research.
